Positive Thinking Techniques
Pessimism is bad for your health! When you are sad, stressed or thinking negative thoughts, hormones are secreted that constrict blood flow to your internal organs, increase your blood pressure and decrease immune function, making you more vulnerable to disease. Learning ways to think positively can literally save your life, and if nothing else, lift your spirits. Here are some suggestions for getting started:
- Look for Lessons… When something happens that makes you sad, instead of wondering, “why me?” ask yourself: “what I am supposed to learn?” And then listen to your mind and heart for the answer. Try to figure out what is to be gained by having this experience.
- Choose to be Happy… When you are thinking negative thoughts, force yourself to think about something that makes you feel good. As an example: if you make a mistake, instead of beating yourself up, think about the times that you did something really well. Make a list of all things you like about yourself.
- Be Good to Yourself… Write down everything that brings you pleasure. Then make a point of trying to do at least one thing on your list each day. Some people think that taking time for themselves is a waste, but when you feel good about yourself, you actually become more efficient.
- Stick with Realistic Goals…When you succeed at something, you feel good about yourself. If you are unable to meet your deadlines or objectives, change your goals so they are more realistic. Instead of giving yourself vague goals, like “clean the garage,” break tasks into smaller objectives, like “put tools away” or “organize hoses.” Keep “to do” lists and prioritize. Cross out those things you finish as you go along to give you a sense of accomplishment.
- Remember, it can always be worse… When you are feeling sad or depressed, think of someone who is even unluckier than you to gain a new perspective and possibly come up with ideas on how to cope.
- Fake it ‘til you make it…Researchers find that just by moving your lips into a shape of a smile, your mood is lifted. So the next time you feel “out of sorts,” force yourself to smile and notice how you feel. You can also “pretend” to feel upbeat and guess what? You will!
“You are alive, so take your life and enjoy it. You were born with the right to be happy, to love, and to share your love. Just to be - to take a risk and enjoy your life - is all that really matters.” Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements
